New Ofcom research reveals the extent to which the UK has become addicted to smartphones, with people confessing to using them everywhere from the dining table to the bathroom and bedroom.
Over a quarter of adults (27%) and almost half of teenagers (47%) now own a smartphone, according to Ofcoms latest Communications Market Report.
Most (5%) have acquired their smartphone over the past year and users make significantly more calls and send more texts than regular mobile users (81% of smartphone users make calls every day compared with 53% of regular users).
The report then goes on to detail how this change is affecting businesses where the number of fixed lines continued to decline in 2010 by 2.3%.
This suggests that businesses are more likely to switch away from fixed voice to other methods of communication, including VoIP and Mobile. This trend is supported by the fact that business are now becoming more mobile and need to be both connected and contactable on the go.
Ofcom has also outlined how it plans to safeguard the future supply of landline numbers in the UK. The plans will avoid the need to change existing phone numbers and will mean consumers and businesses continue to enjoy the widest choice of providers.
